Achraf Hakimi sent Morocco to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup with the coolest of penalties on Tuesday evening.
Morocco and Spain could not be seperated in their last 16 tie. Both sides had chances to break the deadlock but neither could find the net as as the game went all the way to spot-kicks.
And it was Morocco who managed to pull off a stunning upset as they emerged victorious in the shootout.
Spain had a nightmare with their spot-kicks. All three of their penalties, taken by Sergio Busquets, Carlos Soler and Pablo Sarabia, were saved by Yassine Bounou.
Morocco fared much better. Badr Benoun saw his spot-kick saved, but Abdelhamid Sabiri and Hakim Ziyech were successful, giving Hakimi the opportunity to win it for his side.
Hakimi was born in Madrid and has spent much of his life in Spain.
There was a lot of pressure on his shoulders but Morocco’s star player showed he had ice in his veins with the coolest of penalties.
Hakimi strode up to the ball and decided to attempt a Panenka.
Unai Simon dived to his right and looked on in despair as Hakimi’s spot-kick found the back of the net. View it below…
Hakimi then turned around to his teammates and waddled like a penguin as they rushed to celebrate with him.
Imagine having the guts to pull off a Panenka with so much on the line. Just ridiculous from the Paris Saint-Germain star.
Morocco have become just the fourth African side in history to reach the quarter-finals of a World Cup.
They will face the victor of Switzerland or Portugal, who face off at Lusail Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Whoever they play, Morocco will go into the game as underdogs once again. But they are a seriously dangerous side and are more than capable of pulling off yet another shock.
Who knows? They could even be the first African side to go all the way.
