Barcelona legend Samuel Eto’o believes the final of the 2022 World Cup will be contested between two nations from Africa.

The 41-year-old, who is the current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, made the bold prediction in a statement received by ESPN.

There are five African countries who’re travelling to the Qatar World Cup later this month, with Cameroon being one of them.

Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana and current Africa Cup of Nations holders Senegal are the other four nations who progressed through the qualification round.

Who does Eto’o think will play in the 2022 World Cup final?

Eto’o is tipping his country Cameroon (ranked 43rd in the world) to get their hands on the Jules Rimet trophy and believes they’ll beat Morocco (ranked 22nd in the world) in the final on December 18th at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.

“Africa has always had the potential to achieve a successful World Cup, but we haven’t always shown our best face up to now,” Eto’o said in the aforementioned statement.

“During the years, African teams have acquired more and more experience, and I think they’re ready not only to participate in a World Cup, but also to win it.

“Cameroon will win the World Cup final against Morocco.”

Bold, very bold indeed from Eto’o.

How have African nations fared at past World Cups?

Senegal are currently the highest-ranked African nation by FIFA, with Sadio Mane’s team currently 17th following their AFCON triumph earlier in the year.

The Lions of Teranga are one of three countries from the continent to reach the World Cup quarter-finals, with no team from Africa ever progressing further than that stage.

Cameroon first achieved the feat in 1990, before Senegal surprisingly repeated it at the 2002 tournament.

Ghana are the last African nation to reach the quarter-finals and they came the width of a crossbar away from beating Uruguay to reach the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

Who will Cameroon play at the 2022 World Cup?

Eto’o’s Cameroon prediction is made all the more puzzling by the difficulty of his nation’s group.

The Indomitable Lions have been drawn against favourites Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland.

On paper, Cameroon look comfortably the weakest side of the four and rather than making it to the final, they may struggle to even get a single win on the board.
