And just like that, World Cup qualifying is almost over!
There are a number of play-offs coming up in the summer and a few Concacaf fixtures to be played in the next 24 hours but we now have 27 of the 32 teams confirmed, with the USA and Mexico incredibly likely to have joined them by this time tomorrow.
So, what’s left to settle and who is set to be where in the draw?
Mexico and the USA will join Canada at the World Cup if they both just avoid defeat to El Salvador and Costa Rica respectively on Wednesday evening. Even with defeat they could both still qualify on goal difference — they are expected to make it through.
One more Concacaf side, likely to be Costa Rica (unless they can leapfrog USA/Mexico) will head into a play-off against the winner of Wednesday’s OFC game between the Solomon Islands and New Zealand.
Another play-off will see Peru take on either Australia or the UAE in June.
Finally, there’s still one European spot to be decided, with Wales awaiting the winner of the postponed Scotland v Ukraine play-off semi-final in a one-off knockout match for all the marbles.
As ever, the qualified sides will be seeded and split into four pots.
These pots are yet to be fully finalised but, as things stand, look like this …
The hosts and the seven best-ranked qualified sides in the world make up the first pot.
This pot will be completed by the USA and Mexico if they both qualify.
Senegal will also be here should the USA and Mexico both qualify.
Canada will complete this pot if they beat Panama on Wednesday, if they don’t, Tunisia will take the place.
Pot four will also include Tunisia and Cameroon if Canada beat Panama and the USA and Mexico both qualify.
The winners of the remaining play-offs will also go here.
We cannot wait to see what Friday’s draw throws up.
