The 2022 World Cup is just a matter of days away.
Qatar and Ecuador will kick off the winter tournament on November 20 – and we simply can’t wait now.
There is just one round of domestic fixtures standing between us and another international tournament.
Unfortunately, the build-up to the tournament has been blighted with injuries with many big names set to miss out.
.
Nations are currently in the process of naming their 26-man squads ahead of travelling to Qatar. While it’s interesting to see which players will be named in the squads, which players will actually be in the starting XI for each team?
Well, Twitter user @Konate_FPL has attempted to predict the entire XIs of all 32 sides.
How will each of them line up?
Well, we’ve decided to bring you the top 12 nations and their most likely starting line-ups ahead of the tournament. Of course, these are subject to change due to injury and availability.
Brazil are current favourites for the tournament and it’s not too hard to see why. They look so exciting in attack with Vinicius Jr, Neymar, Raphinha and Richarlison. That’s with the likes of Antony, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli on the bench. Perhaps defensively is where Brazil are weakest but with Alisson in goal, that may not matter too much.
Can Lionel Messi lead Argentina to glory? Well, this is the XI that Argentina are likely to field in Qatar. They have been boosted by the fact Angel di Maria looks to be winning his race to be fit, while Lautaro Martinez leads the line.
Uruguay might just be the dark horses of this World Cup. A front-two of Luis Suarez and Darwin Nunez will certainly be entertaining for everyone. A midfield duo of Fede Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur is good enough to compete with any side.
Germany will be looking to bounce back after disappointing in two consecutive tournaments with a strong XI. Defensively they look solid, while a midfield duo of Ilkay Gundogan and Joshua Kimmich has bags of experience. Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry provide all the pace and flair with Kai Havertz operating as a false nine. Don’t write off the Germans.
France will go into the Qatar World Cup as one of the favourites. They look likely to set-up in a wing-back formation with Theo Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard operating as those wing-backs. An exciting and combative midfield two of Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni will provide the base for Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema.
Diogo Jota will miss out through injury, while Joao Felix’s lack of form at Atletico Madrid could also cost him a place in the starting XI. It means that Cristiano Ronaldo is set to lead the line with Rafael Leao, Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes backing him up. William Carvalho and Ruben Neves form a classy midfield while Manchester City duo Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo are in the back four.
This isn’t the Spain of 2010 but there’s plenty of exciting talent in the likely starting XI. Barcelona wonderkids Pedri and Gavi look set to start. But it’s a Spain side that appear to be short on goals with Ferran Torres and Pablo Sarabia flanking Alvaro Morata.
The biggest decision for Gareth Southgate appears to be at right wing-back but that decision appears set to be Kieran Trippier after it was revealed Reece James won’t be fit. Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham have made the midfield spots their own, while Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden will support Harry Kane.
This World Cup could be a real breakout for 23-year-old Cody Gakpo, who is impressing at PSV this season. He’s likely to play in front of Teun Koopmeiners and Frenkie de Jong in midfield and supporting Memphis Depay and Steven Bergwijn.
This ‘Golden Generation’ is getting older but Belgium are still capable of going far at the 2022 World Cup. Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Axel Witsel are approaching the end of their careers but still have plenty to offer. But with arguably the best midfielder in world football in their XI in Kevin De Bruyne, you simply can’t rule out the Red Devils.
Denmark reached the semi finals of Euro 2020 and their squad looks pretty exciting again this time around – especially in attack. 22-year-old Andreas Skov Olsen is set to start on the right and it’ll be incredible to see Christian Eriksen return for another international tournament after his horrifying Euro 2020.
Croatia are certainly outsiders but with a midfield three of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozović and Matteo Kovacic they will be extremely tough to beat. The experienced Ivan Perisic will look to supply the Hajduk Split’s Marko Livaja.
