When did Germany last win the World Cup? How many times have they won the competition? Here’s everything you need to know!
The German national team are one of the most successful sides in World Cup history and go into the tournament in Qatar as one of the favourites to go all the way.
Germany have a squad absolutely packed with talent, including the likes of Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, Chelsea’s Kai Havertz, and Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan.
Now managed by Hansi Flick, Die Mannschaft face a remarkably tough World Cup group, having been paired with fellow European powerhouses Spain, as well as Costa Rica and Japan.
But how many times has Germany won the World Cup and when did they most recently lift the iconic trophy?
Germany last won the trophy in 2014 in Brazil.
Then managed by Joachim Low, they came through a group comprised of Portugal, Ghana and the USA, and then beat Algeria and France in the Round of 16 and quarter-finals respectively.
In the semi-finals, they stunned Brazil in their own backyards, beating them 7-1 in one of the most historic results in World Cup history.
It was little surprise, then, that they went on to win the trophy by beating Argentina 1-0 in the final.
However, when they attempted to defend their trophy in 2018, they were knocked out in the group stages, as they lost to both South Korea and Mexico, although they did manage to beat Sweden.
They have something to prove, then, as they come into the 2022 tournament.
Germany have won the tournament four times.
In addition to their 2014 triumph, they also lifted the trophy in 1990, 1974, and 1954. Some of those victories came when the nation was known as West Germany.
They are also the only team to have finished at least third in every decade there was a tournament held.
Indeed, they have been runners-up four times, in 1966, 1982, 1986, and 2002, and finished third in 1934, 1970, 2006, and 2010.
They are a remarkably successful international team and will expect to go deep into the competition in Qatar.
Germany have announced their squad for the tournament and there are some real stars in the selection, although one of the major surprises is the inclusion of Mario Gotze, who scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final.
