Over the years, the FIFA World Cup has seen some incredible goals scored. The 2014 World Cup saw Australian legend Tim Cahill put his name in the history books for his unbelievable strike against the Netherlands.

Group B provided one of the biggest shocks of the 2014 World Cup. Matchday one saw a clash between 2010 finalists Spain and the Netherlands, where Louis Van Gaal’s side got revenge on the defending champions by smashing them 5-1 at the Arena Fonte Nova.

Group B also had multiple goal of the tournament contenders, such as Robin Van Persie’s header versus Spain and Cahill’s thunderbolt of a strike against the Netherlands.

Australia 2-3 Netherlands

Australia and the Netherlands played each other in matchday two of Group B at the Estadio Beira-Rio in what turned out to be a five-goal thriller.

The Netherlands took an unsurprising lead in the 20th minute after Arjen Robben carried the ball past the Australian defence and midfield before slotting it into the bottom right corner.

However, Australia replied straight away in incredible fashion as Cahill put his name into the headlines after an unbelievable effort beat Jasper Cilessen in the Netherlands’ net.

Tim Cahill’s wonderstrike

The goal came after a sublime floated cross from Ryan McGowan on the right wing towards the Dutch penalty area. The Everton icon unleashed a vicious volley that flew past Cilessen ricocheting off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Cahill’s goal saw new confidence embedded into the Australian side, and on the 54th minute mark, they took the lead for the first time in the game as a handball from Daryl Janmaat saw Mike Jedinak convert the spot kick.

However, Australia’s lead wouldn’t last long as Van Persie levelled the game three minutes later with a left-footed strike that flew past Australia goalkeeper Matthew Ryan.

The Netherlands would go on to win the game 3-2 after a goal from Memphis Depay.

What happened next?

Van Gaal’s side topped Group B with maximum points and ended up finishing third place in the competition, whereas Australia were knocked out of the competition in the group stages.

However, Cahill’s goal will always be an incredible moment in Australian footballing history, as well as World Cup history.
