The Jabulani football caused havoc at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The trajectory of the ball made it a long day for goalkeepers and the proverbial pig-skin goes down as one of the most controversial footballs in history.
For forwards, the Jabulani was a blessing – players like Uruguay legend Diego Forlan mastered the ball, executing outrageous strikes.
However, one of the finest goals of the tournament came from Netherlands captain Giovanni Van Bronkhorst.
The semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup saw the Netherlands play against tournament dark horses Uruguay, who had knocked the likes of Ghana and South Korea out of the tournament on the way to the semi-finals.
The match between these two sides could arguably go down as one of the best matches of the tournament, as the game culminated in a five-goal thriller, with unbelievable goals from Forlan and Van Bronckhorst stealing the show.
Van Bronkhorst broke the deadlock for the Netherlands in the 18th minute of the game after Demy De Zeeuw played a short pass into the fullback’s feet on the left side of the pitch. Van Bronkhorst had plenty of space just past the halfway line and unleashed a vicious left-footed shot from around 40 yards out, and the ball flew over Fernando Muslera in the Uruguay goal and nestled into the top right corner.
The movement of the ball left Muslera in the Uruguay goal with no chance to save the thunderbolt of a strike from the Dutch captain.
However, just before halftime, the game was leveled by a piece of magic from Uruguay starman Forlan. He took the ball in his stride after latching onto a pass from Wesley Gargano before firing a swerving shot with his left foot past Maarten Stekelenburg in the Netherlands goal.
The second half saw Bert van Marwijk’s side take the lead after a 70th-minute goal from playmaker Wesley Sneijder. The Netherlands extended the lead to two goals when Arjen Robben added his name to the scoresheet, heading home a Dirk Kuyt cross.
Maximiliano Pereira got a goal in the dying minutes of added time, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Netherlands booked their place in the World Cup Final.

Van Bronckhorst’s unbelievable strike ended up placing as the second-best goal in the whole tournament, and was the only goal he had ever scored in the World Cup finals during his playing career.
