Aston Villa struck late on to pull off a huge upset by knocking three-time winners of the Women’s FA Cup, Man City, out of the competition.

Villa boss Carla Ward hailed the victory as “probably the biggest night” in the club’s history as they eliminated last year’s finalists and WSL title-chasers City.

Elsewhere, Lewes’ run ended with a defeat to Man Utd, Chelsea triumphed over Reading and Brighton got past Birmingham.

Rio Rosenberg rounds up the latest action…

ASTON VILLA 2-1 MANCHESTER CITY

Aston Villa knocked out three-time winners Manchester City thanks to an extra- time Rachel Daly goal.

Villa captain Rachel Corsie opened the scoring after her header deflected off Manchester City defender Esme Morgan, but as half-time approached City equalised through Deyna Castellanos.

The game remained tightly contested until Lioness Daly tapped home from close range to score the winner.

MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 LEWES

Manchester United earned a hard-earned victory over Championship side Lewes.

Lewes were the lowest ranked side going into the fixture and had great home support in a sell-out game at the Dripping Pan, but the atmosphere did not phase Manchester United who took the lead through a Rhian Cleverly own goal just 8 minutes into the game.

Vilda Boe Risa doubled the lead before half time before Lewes managed to get back into the game through a lobbed finish from Emily Kraft.

But Manchester United winger Nikita Parris secured the victory in the 89th minute to send her side through.

READING 1-3 CHELSEA

The current holders Chelsea secured their spot in the semi-finals with goals from Jess Carter, Guro Reiten and a penalty from Maren Mjelde.

This allowed Emma Hayes to give some academy players their debut, with Ashanti Akpan, Cerys Brown and Reanna Blades coming on in the closing moments off the game. Reading did net through Sanne Troelsgaard but it proved to be of little importance to the tie.

BIRMINGHAM 0-2 BRIGHTON

Two quick-fire goals in four minutes ensured Brighton a spot in the final four.

Brighton gained the lead though a Poppy Pattinson corner before Danielle Carter scored from the penalty spot.

However, Championship side Birmingham will feel frustrated with the result after hitting the frame of the goal three times.

The semi-final draw for the Women’s FA Cup will be made on Tuesday, 21st March.
