Wolves targeting Rafa Silva after Benfica wonder goal

Wolves look set to have a busy summer with incoming transfers, particularly in the attacking areas of the pitch after disappointing fans in the final third.

Just five teams in the Premier League have scored fewer goals than Bruno Lage’s side, and their top scorer, Raul Jimenez, has only six for the entire season so far.

Having been linked with Valencia star Goncalo Guedes already this week, it looks likely that the club will utilise their Portuguese connections to compile a shortlist of transfer targets, and another name that has been linked recently is Benfica winger Rafa Silva.

What’s the news?

A Bola, Lage remains interested in the 28-year-old, who has scored eight Primeira Liga goals so far this season, and has already made contact in a bid to do so.

Should Wolves sign Rafa Silva this Summer?

The report also states that he could be available for between €20m-€30m (£17m and £25m), a huge decrease on the £42m that was originally quoted by French publication Jeunes Footeux earlier this month to be the price tag set on him.

Lage needs him

With the report coming just days after the former Braga ace netted an “extraordinary” solo effort for Benfica, Wolves fans will be drooling over the idea that the right-winger could play at Molineux next season.

If there is one thing guaranteed that Rafa would bring to Lage’s team, it’s goals and creativity in the final third, having created 17 big chances this campaign in the league, as well as making on average 1.6 key passes per game.

He also should have scored plenty more goals than the impressive total he has amassed already, having also missed 11 big chances for his team, who sit third in the league.

Players signed from Portugal often fail to make the grade in the better quality leagues in Europe, with the likes of Gedson Fernandes, Renato Sanches and Jackson Martinez all making moves from the country to higher reputation teams in recent years, but failing at their respective clubs.

Which club did Wolves loan Willian Jose from in the 2021 January transfer window?

However, Wolves have often utilised their Portuguese links in recent years to great success, and Rafa could follow down the same path as the likes of Ruben Neves, Rui Patricio and Willy Boly, who all went on to become fan favourites after making moves from Primeira Liga clubs.

On that evidence, this potential acquisition could be another masterclass from Fosun and co who are in desperate need of adding more goals and chance creators to their armoury.
