The Midlands side have taken an interest in Anthony Patterson, not for the first time.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been keeping a close eye on Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson after taking an interest in him, as per a report from Give Me Sport.

Patterson has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for the Black Cats in recent years, managing to fend off other shot-stoppers to secure a regular starting spot at the Stadium of Light.

He initially took over from Lee Burge to become the club's number-one stopper during the latter stages of their time in League One - and was trusted by Alex Neil and his successor Tony Mowbray to be the club's first-choice keeper in the Championship following their promotion.

Alex Bass was signed, but he was unable to win much game time during his time on Wearside and Patterson was also able to keep Nathan Bishop out of the starting lineup during the 2023/24 campaign.

Bishop has now been loaned out to Wycombe Wanderers to win more game time, whilst Patterson remains at the SoL as one of the Black Cats' most important players.

The goalkeeper is one of many Black Cats players who could attract interest in the coming weeks, with Jack Clarke likely to be wanted by several teams following an excellent 2023/24 season and Jobe Bellingham enjoying an excellent first campaign on Wearside.

Others, including Trai Hume and Pierre Ekwah, have also shown promise in recent years and could attract big fees, with both still in the early stages of their respective careers.

Wolves interest in Anthony Patterson emerges

Wolves first took an interest in Patterson during the early stages of 2023, with the stopper impressing during his first season in the second tier.

However, a move failed to materialise in the end and the stopper went on to sign a new deal to keep him on Wearside until the summer of 2028.

This has placed the club in a strong negotiating position, but that hasn't stopped Wolves from reigniting their interest in the player.

According to Give Me Sport, the goalkeeper has been scouted by the Midlands club throughout the 2023/24 campaign and they are now weighing up whether to test the Black Cats' resolve with a bid.

He may come in as a replacement for Dan Bentley, whose future at Molineux is uncertain at this stage.

Patterson has been much more of an asset than a liability during his time between the sticks.

He's still a fairly young stopper, but has plenty of experience under his belt now and that makes him the perfect keeper for the Black Cats to have.

With his contract not expiring until the summer of 2028 too, the Wearside club may not be under a lot of pressure to sell him.

Patterson is a player who can definitely be replaced, especially if the Black Cats can generate a big fee for him.

But selling others whose contracts expire in the shorter term may make more sense.
