Wolves played a blinder over Adama Traore

After minimal change to the playing staff at Molineux over the summer, this Wolverhampton Wanderers squad is still very much Nuno Santo’s.

The Portuguese coach departed at the beginning of the summer after a rift over the club’s transfer policy, one which ultimately restricted new manager Bruno Lage in the transfer window.

He has been quick to make hints towards the board that the first-team squad is far too small and you can hardly blame him after the start to the season they’ve had.

Wolves have picked up just three points from their opening five matches, and in four of those games, they’ve failed to score a single goal.

What epitomised their campaign so far was an own goal opening their account for the season when they beat Watford.

There have been few positives for Lage but one of them has to be the dangerous Adama Traore.

How much is Traore worth?

Wolves swatted away a £30m offer from Tottenham for the dazzling winger late in the transfer window and now they seem to be closer to renewing his contract.

The club’s hierarchy have been at a stalemate with the Spaniard in recent times over his future but he looks ready to commit to Molineux.

A new deal would cap a fabulous rise for the speedster, who has attracted many plaudits for his magical displays in the Premier League.

The Midlands outfit activated Traore’s £18m release clause at Middlesbrough back in August 2018 and he has gone from strength to strength since.

He has so far recorded an outstanding 9.8 dribbles per game in the Premier League this season, numbers which usurp every single player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Can you guess these obscure Wolves players? Here's the first one...

Joao Teixeira

Roderick

Silvio

Rafa Mir

That is a dumbfounding tally for a player who has been dubbed “unplayable” and “unbelievable” by Jurgen Klopp.

He has also caught the eye of Pep Guardiola, who explained the winger’s style of play perfectly by saying: “He is a motorcycle! It’s almost impossible [to stop him]. Nobody can handle this pace.”

With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise to see his transfer value rise so astronomically. Spurs rated him at £30m but had the offer rejected, failing to meet Wolves’ demands of £50m.

On the basis of his speed and dribbling, the 25-year-old is worth every penny of that, but his end product is still rather questionable. He scored just twice last season and is yet to be involved in a goal this term.

2019/20 appears to be the anomaly for Traore, a campaign where he found the back of the net on four occasions and registered nine assists.

If he can rediscover that type of form, it surely won’t be long before a suitor is willing to meet Wolves’ enormous asking price.

If the Old Gold do receive such an offer, then Fosun will surely be beaming from ear to ear. They can already sit proudly knowing that they struck a brilliant deal in bringing him to the club in the first place.
