Wolverhampton Wanderers’ potential signing of Racing Club midfielder Carlos Alcaraz would be “a real coup” for Julen Lopetegui’s side at Molineux, journalist Pete O’Rourke has suggested to GiveMeSport.

Wolves’ new head coach will be hoping to implement his own stamp on his new team with a raft of signings during the January window.

Wolves transfer news – Carlos Alcaraz

Portuguese news outlet O Jogo (via Sport Witness) initially reported Wolves’ interest in Alcaraz towards the end of last month, with Benfica also reportedly eyeing up the midfielder as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernández if he were to leave the club in January.

More recently The Guardian’s Ed Aarons has confirmed the West Midlands side’s interest in the 20-year-old, who is expected to cost around £17m if he is to make the move to the Molineux outfit this month.

Head coach Lopetegui revealed after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa that midfielder Boubacar Traoré is expected to be out of action for one/two months, leaving the Premier League side with only three senior midfielders at their disposal.

Journalist Dean Jones has recently told GiveMeSport that the former Sevilla manager has brought a “mentality switch” to the club after former head coach Bruno Lage was sacked in October of last year, but will hope to see the club’s momentum backed up with more signings this month.

And O’Rourke believes that the addition of Alcaraz would give Wolves “a big boost” in their push for Premier League survival this season.

What has O’Rourke said about Wolves and Alcaraz?

O’Rourke told GiveMeSport: “Like all those other teams down near the bottom of the table, goals have been a big issue for Wolves this season.

“If they could sign someone like Alcaraz ahead of some of Europe’s top clubs, it’d be a real coup for the club and give them a big boost for the second half of the season.”

Would Alcaraz be a good signing for Wolves?

With Wolves in desperate need for another midfielder, Alcaraz could be the signing that pushes the club’s head above the water in the top flight this season.

The young starlet, who has been described as “gold” by Àlex de Llano, made 42 appearances for Racing across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in that time according to Transfermarkt, suggesting he could provide some attacking flair from the middle of the park for Lopetegui’s side.

With Rúben Neves and João Moutinho having just 18 months and six months remaining on their current contracts respectively, as well as rumours of a potential move to Liverpool for Matheus Nunes, now would be a good time for Wolves to start making midfield additions for the future, with Alcaraz potentially being the first of these arrivals at Molineux this month.
