Wolverhampton Wanderers are still looking to recruit a new centre-back despite the closure of the summer window, but they are struggling to meet Jason Denayer’s wage demands at Molineux, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

While Willy Boly sealed his move to Nottingham Forest on deadline day, West Ham United blocked Craig Dawson’s switch to Wolves, leaving head coach Bruno Lage with few options at the heart of his back four.

What’s the latest news involving Denayer?

Denayer is currently a free agent after his £53,000-per-week contract at Lyon expired in the summer, meaning he can still be signed outside of the transfer window.

It is understood that Wolves have made an approach to sign the 27-year-old and put a three-year deal on the table.

However, it appears Denayer – a 35-cap Belgium international who has enjoyed spells in English football with Manchester City and Sunderland – is not convinced by the West Midlands outfit’s proposal.

That is because Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that negotiations have reached an impasse due to Wolves holding firm on their offer and Denayer being unwilling to lower his wage demands.

Lage seems to have confirmed that he is in the market for the 27-year-old as he admitted ‘I know him very well’ and ‘let’s see what can happen’ when questioned over a potential move.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Denayer?

Romano understands that Wolves are still in the hunt for a central defender after missing out on the acquisition of Dawson from West Ham.

However, the respected Italian journalist is aware that Denayer’s salary expectations are proving to be problematic for the Premier League side.

When asked whether Lage could still look to strengthen his squad, Romano told GIVEMESPORT: “Yes, they are looking for a centre-back.

“Denayer is not easy because of the salary, but they are exploring some possibilities.”

Are Wolves looking at any other free agents?

It is understood that Wolves are on the verge of welcoming Diego Costa back to the Premier League as he is set to undergo a medical on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old, who has been without a club since Atletico Mineiro terminated his contract in January, made 120 appearances while on Chelsea’s books and racked up 59 goals.

Wolves are keen to acquire Costa as Sasa Kalajdzic suffered an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament on his debut at the weekend, while fellow frontman Raul Jimenez picked up a groin problem during the warm-up.
