Journalist Luke Hatfield hopes that Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves can rediscover his best form after scoring a dramatic late winner against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 24-year-old has looked out of sorts at times this season, but stepped up at the crucial moment to hand Wolves all three points at Villa Park.

What did Neves do against Villa?

Neves, who Transfermarkt value at £37.8m, has been a key player at Wolves since arriving at Molineux in 2017, but he has been below-par this term. This led to him being dropped for the team's clash with Southampton last month.

He has since been restored to the side's starting line-up, yet it looked like Wolves were heading for a derby defeat on the weekend when they fell 2-0 behind against Dean Smith's men.

The visitors refused to give in, though, and got back on level terms thanks to goals from Romain Saiss and Conor Coady inside the final 10 minutes.

Deep into injury-time, they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. Neves stepped up, and with the help of a deflection, he sent Emiliano Martinez the wrong way to seal a stunning comeback victory.

What has Hatfield said about Neves?

Hatfield has acknowledged that there was an element of luck with how Neves' strike made its way into the back of the net. However, he believes the 25-cap international could now use that moment to inspire him to get back to his best.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said of Neves: “Maybe he’ll take the joy of the goal and the fact that he’s popped up with that last-minute winner as a bit of fire in his belly to get him going. Because we’ve not really seen the Ruben Neves of old recently. And when he’s on it, he’s an incredibly good player.”

Has Neves been affected by transfer speculation?

He was linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer, and it is possible that this speculation took its toll on him mentally. This may explain why he's had a slow start to the season.

Who did Wolves beat on the opening day of the 2020/21 campaign?

Sheffield United Manchester City Arsenal Newcastle United

We are now well into the campaign, though, and his contribution on Saturday indicated that he is beginning to find his feet again.

Wolves travel to Leeds United this coming weekend, and if Neves can deliver another strong showing, it would suggest that he is back on track and ready to perform on a consistent basis once more for Bruno Lage's side.
