Wolverhampton Wanderers will prioritise the signing of a central midfielder before the transfer window closes, according to Ryan Taylor of the Daily Express.

Bruno Lage’s side have made just one signing this season, with the arrival of Burnley and Republic of Ireland centre-back Nathan Collins for £20.5m.

What’s the latest on Wolves?

Wolves are currently under pressure to make signings before September’s transfer window closure, with the club currently only possessing three out-and-out senior centre-midfielders in the squad, in Rúben Neves, João Moutinho, and Leander Dendoncker.

And with Moutinho injured for the club’s 2-1 defeat in their Premier League opener at Leeds, the club have no more room for midfield injuries, if they want to have a full senior starting eleven this season.

The club have been linked with a variety of midfielders this season, including Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes, and River Plate’s Enzo Fernandez, but neither deal ended up materialising, with the latter heading to Benfica instead this summer.

And according to Taylor, a midfield addition will be prioritised this summer, alongside a centre-back and striker.

What has Taylor said about Wolves?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Enzo Fernandez was another one Wolves looked at, but didn’t happen.

“I think central midfield will still be one of priority, alongside a right sided centre-back and striker, but Nunes is a difficult deal to do.”

What next for Wolves?

According to multiple sources, Wolves have agreed a fee of more than £27m with Valencia for the signing of forward Gonçalo Guedes this summer.

The 25-year-old will be just Wolves’ second addition of the transfer window so far, but it seems that the club will now move quickly to secure more signings, now that the Premier League season has begun.

According to Record in Portugal, Sporting are drawing up a plan for life after Nunes, with Wolves one of the clubs linked for his signature, though as Taylor stated, a deal looks tough to negotiate, with the player being unconvinced on the move.

In terms of defensive additions, Lage’s side have been rumoured to be interested in signing Hoffenheim centre-back Stefan Posch for roughly £8.4m this summer, suggesting that the club are still looking to strengthen all aspects of the side, in preparation for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.Judging by how thin Wolves’ squad is at the moment, it seems inevitable that the club will have to invest in the side this season, otherwise it could be a long season ahead for Lage and his side.
