Wolverhampton Wanderers have opened talks to sign Lens centre-back Kevin Danso in a £16 million deal as they look to bolster their defensive options, according to The Telegraph.
Talks will not be easy as Lens have already sold one central defender – Abdukodir Khusanov to Manchester City – and do not want to lose another player.
Wolves sit in 18th place and have conceded the second most goals this term in the Premier League (52).
Head coach Vitor Pereira has identified the Austrian international as a key target to plug that problem, aiming to make Danso his second acquisition of the month at the Molineux.
Wolves recently captured Emmanuel Agbadou from Reims for an initial £16 million, and he has been stellar for the Premier League strugglers as they seek to address their defensive vulnerabilities.
Over the summer, Wolves sold captain Maximilian Kilman to West Ham United for £40 million without signing a replacement for the influential centre-back.
To make matters worse for the West Midlands club, a season-ending injury to Yerson Mosquera has left them alarmingly thin at centre-back.
Interestingly, Danso was one of Wolves’ initial targets to replace Kilman, and they tried to move for him, but nothing materialised.
Wolves have returned for Danso. The 26-year-old has been one of the best defenders in Ligue 1 for some time and is an experienced international. His arrival would bolster that brittle defence.
Danso did have an uninspiring loan spell with Southampton in the 2019/20 season, but he has grown in leaps and bounds since then.
Wolves remain in the relegation zone with just 16 points from 23 matches. They face a crucial Midlands derby against Aston Villa on Saturday as they look to revive their faltering season.
