Wolves have been fined for causing a mass brawl in their EFL Cup quarter-final with Nottingham Forest.

Tempers flared in the immediate aftermath of January’s last-eight showdown at the City Ground as players from both sides were involved in a scuffle after the hosts won a penalty shootout.

Julen Lopetegui’s side took issue with former Wolves player Morgan Gibbs-White’s celebration of the victory over his old club, which sparked the on-field conflict.

Both Wolves and Forest admitted to charges of failing to control their players later that month and were fined £45,000 and £40,000 respectively.

But the Football Association has now explained why the clubs received uneven financial punishments for their part in the incident.

An independent commission report found Lopetegui seeking out Gibbs-White after the tie ended and Wolves forward Matheus Cunha’s decision to approach the pair before ‘pushing’ the Forest midfielder to be instigating factors in the fracas.

The sides will face off again in next month’s Premier League encounter at the City Ground as both bid to stave off the threat of relegation.
