Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julen Lopetegui has confirmed he is interested in signing Atletico Madrid duo Matheus Cunha and Felipe via Cadena SER.

Wolves have been locked in negotiations with Atletico for the double swoop of Cunha and Felipe in the January transfer window.

Recent reports stated that the Molineux outfit are optimistic about finding an agreement soon.

Cunha has struggled for regular minutes since his transfer from Hertha BSC in 2021.

The Brazilian forward has made just two starts out of 17 appearances this season after being repeatedly overlooked by manager Diego Simeone.

Cunha’s struggles also saw him miss Brazil’s squad for the World Cup 2022. He cut a dismal figure following his exclusion.

The 23-year-old is ready to leave Wanda Metropolitano to revive his career, while Los Rojiblancos are prepared to sanction his exit as he is not in Simeone’s plans.

Cunha’s compatriot Felipe also has no future at Atletico, with his contract expiring next summer.

Lopetegui has addressed the rumours of Cunha and Felipe, stating that both are on Wolves’ transfer wishlist.

He said: “We have quite a few options open – at the moment, we have nothing closed. If we can close them as soon as possible, the better.

“Both Cunha and Felipe are options to sign in the January market – they are to our liking. The important thing is to create a good group.”

Lopetegui was announced as the new head coach of Wolves just before the World Cup break following Bruno Lage’s dismissal.

The former Sevilla boss will have backing in the transfer market, and one of the priorities is signing a new striker.

Summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic remains sidelined after suffering an ACL injury on his debut for Wolves.

Meanwhile, injury-prone Raul Jimenez could leave in January as he is not in Lopetegui’s plans.
