Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced on their official website about the signing of Matija Sarkic on a three-year deal this summer. The Montenegro international was released by Aston Villa earlier this summer, but Wolves have wasted no time by securing his services on a free transfer.

Sarkic’s Impressive Loan Spell At The Tony Macaroni Arena Last Season

The Grimsby-born talent came through the youth ranks of Anderlecht before joining the Villans back in 2015. The 23-year-old spent half of last season on loan at Livingston where he earned a lot of plaudits for his impressive displays in the Scottish Premiership.

Sarkic made 18 appearances for the Scottish outfit in the previous campaign, conceding 21 goals while securing seven clean sheets in all competitions which highlight his incredible loan time in Scottish football. However, he has failed to break into Dean Smith’s first-team, so it makes sense for him to join Wolves this summer.

The lack of first-team action has hampered his development at Villa Park. Therefore, a change of scenery could now help him make a fresh start and find some form at the highest level.

What Will The Montenegrin Keeper Add To Nuno Espirito Santo’s Team?

Sarkic is a well-rounded keeper at the back. He can position himself ideally according to the situation in front of him and can pull some solid stops using his quick reflexes and strong palms. The Montenegro international is also a decent distributor of the ball but is nowhere near the level of Wolves’ number one keeper, Rui Patricio.

Was It A Good Move For Wolves To Recruit Sarkic This Summer?

Sarkic will struggle to get any game time in the Premier League next season unless there is an emergency. At the same time, he could still play a pivotal role for them in the cup competitions. The Montenegrin goalie will also offer some serious competition for the likes of John Ruddy and Will Norris in the race to earn a place on the bench at the Molineux Stadium next season.

Standing at 1.95m tall, Sarkic will be an imposing figure inside the Wolves penalty box and has the potential to replace Patricio as the club’s number one keeper someday. At 23, the ex-Aston Villa shot-stopper has still not hit the peak years of his football career, so he seems like a decent signing for Nuno Espirito Santo ahead of the new season.
