Over the course of the transfer window, it has been well documented that a number of Bundesliga clubs have been attempting to court the Dutch defender.
Having enjoyed a successful loan spell with Mainz last season, the 05ers have been one of the sides attempting to lure van den Berg back to the club.
However, Liverpool have refused to lower their asking price, making a deal for the defender difficult, with Mainz now hoping for the Dutcman to force a move through.
Nevertheless, Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen had both expressed an interest in paying Liverpool a lucrative fee for van den Berg’s signature, as the Wolves look to add defensive reinforcement due to the impending sale of Maxence Lacroix to Crystal Palace.
Regardless, the Reds are believed to have increased their valuation of van den Berg from €20 million to €25 million.
This has ultimately forced Wolfsburg to withdraw from negotiations, with the club frustrated over Liverpool’s handling of the deal.
Die Werkself are still open to the idea of signing the defender, having made contact with the 22-year-old over the past few days, but as of yet, they have failed to make an offer.
