Since being thrust into the limelight following an injury to Wolfsburg No. 1 Kamil Grabara, German goalkeeper Marius Müller’s young career has been proceeding quite well. The 31-year-old rookie has ensured that there’s been no drop in quality in the Wolfsburg goal. In three Bundesliga and one German Cup start, Müller conceded only three goals in 360 minutes of football.
A 75 percent save rate leaves Müller one of the best at his position over the past month. At present, Müller’s save rate places him fifth best in the Bundesliga. He’s grabbed all of the crosses sent in his direction, racked up a 69 percent short passing rate and a 44 percent long ball success rate. Müller exceeds Grabara in every last major statistical category.
Germany’s green company team still face their challenges. Wednesday’s Pokal defeat to RB Leipzig wasted another fine performance from Müller. Ralph Hasenhütll’s Wölfe maintained some hope of qualifying for Europe for the first time since the 2020/21 campaign via the cup. Now they must do so via the table. Currently eighth on 34 points, matters look tough for the Autostädter.
Mainz 05, SC Freiburg, Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart are currently well ahead of Wolfsburg. Beneath the Lower Saxons, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach stand a solid chance of overtaking. Speaking to Kicker, Müller commented both on his performance on the pitch and showed that he possessed some leadership qualities off of it.
“That’s my job,” Müller said of his impressive record. “I have to keep the balls out and provide security for the lads. I think we are defending well at the moment. We have to continue like this and things will get better.
“We just need to have the balls,” Müller said of the European race.
