The DFB Sports Court have disqualified Bundesliga side Wolfsburg from this season’s DFB Pokal following their substitution mishap against Pressen Münster.

Despite winning their first-round match 3-1 on August 8, head coach Mark Van Bommel brought on Sebastiaan Bornauw and Admir Mehmedi in extra time – his fifth and sixth substitutes.

Unfortunately for the newly appointed Dutchman, that was one substitute too many with only five substitutions being allowed in the DFB Pokal.

The following day, Münster officially appealed the result and claimed that “with the illegal substitution, the visitors influenced the game decisively to our disadvantage.”

Wolfsburg insist that Van Bommel and other members of the coaching staff had repeatedly asked the fourth official if a sixth substitute was permitted.

But the DFB and other official sporting bodies have sided with Münster, believing that “clubs’ basic duties is to find out about substitution options and to act accordingly.”

Wolfsburg can be appeal to the DFB Federal Court within 24 hours – otherwise Münster will be awarded a 2-0 win and progress to the second round.
