Wojciech Szczesny made his UEFA Champions League debut for FC Barcelona last night against SL Benfica and endured a horrid start.

The 34-year-old Pole, chosen ahead of Inaki Pena, was responsible for two of the three goals that Benfica scored in the first period at Estadio da Luz, with his decision-making letting the team down big time.

Szczesny did go on to redeem himself somewhat with crucial saves in the final stages of the match to help Barça secure a 4-5 comeback win.

Not looking back

Speaking to the media after the match, Szczesny chose not to reflect on his error-ridden display but instead expressed optimism about what Barcelona can achieve in the remainder of the season.

“I do not want to look back because there is still a long way to go in the Champions League. There are fantastic teams and we must be at our best level if we want to be competitive,” said Szczesny, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Talking about his time so far at Barça, having come out of retirement to sign for the Catalans, the 34-year-old added:

“These last six months have been quite a challenge for me, but I can say that I am very happy with the decision to come to Barcelona.”

Barcelona’s 18-year-old defender Pau Cubarsi described the Champions League match against Benfica on Tuesday, as “the craziest” match he has ever experienced.

“We are all very happy because we pulled out the soul we had inside,” said Cubarsi, as quoted by MD.

Reflecting on the match at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz, he emphasised that “it was important to win” in order to achieve the goal of qualifying directly for the last 16.

Regarding the altercation in the tunnel between the two teams after the match, where Raphinha claimed to have been insulted, Cubarsi stated that he did not see anything as he was the first to enter and focused solely on celebrating the victory.
