With Phil Foden firing Manchester City are an entirely different proposition. We have seen that so far in 2025. The England international made a slow start to this season, but since the turn of the new year, Foden has rediscovered his best form. With Foden firing we have seen Pep Guardiola’s side begin to resemble themselves at their best. The hope is that Foden’s strong start to the new year can continue for the remainder of this season.
Foden was on the scoresheet in Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Chelsea. His goal in the 87th minute ended yesterday’s match as a contest. The run and finish from Phil Foden after he got on the end of Erling Haaland’s sublime piece of hold-up play and ball was Foden at his best. The Chelsea defence couldn’t catch him and he calmly converted the chance past Robert Sanchez to end the game. Foden also smacked the post in the first half with a strike we have seen many times before from the England international.
With Foden firing Manchester City are an infinitely more dangerous team. His goal-scoring ability adds another weapon to Pep Guardiola’s side. That isn’t a ground break revelation it’s a well known fact. Foden’s goals were missed earlier this season when Manchester City were struggling. But it is no coincidence that City are showing signs of life now that Foden has his mojo back. Foden will have a key role to play for the remainder of the season and if his form holds he could help fire Pep Guardiola’s side to a top-four finish and possibly more this season.
But watching Foden since the turn of the year you can tell that he is back to his best. His goal against Chelsea yesterday was a further illustration of this. He will be hoping to carry his recent form into City’s crucial Champions League fixture against Club Brugge this week. If he does he could help fire Manchester City into the next stage of the competition.
