Wissa reaches impressive milestone in Brentford's draw with Everton

Yoane Wissa was on target once again as Brentford drew 1-1 at home with in-form Everton at Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The striker leapt like a salmon to head home after Bryan Mbeumo's effort - following Kevin Schade's long throw - cannoned off the crossbar.

That goal was Wissa's 13th of the Premier League season which represents his best tally for the club and shows his constant improvement since arriving from Lorient in 2021.

Wissa scored seven league goals in each of his first two seasons in England before almost doubling that tally to net 12 in the top flight last year.

Only two other players have managed more league goals in a season for the Bees in the Premier League era with Ivan Toney holding the record of 20 for the 2022/23 campaign.

The other player is Mbeumo who is currently on 15 for this year and will be hoping to set the record himself by the end of the campaign.

Wissa is also just two goals away from his best-ever league tally which was back in 2019/20 when he scored 15 for Lorient in the French second tier.

The DR Congo international has hit his baker's dozen of goals without taking a spot-kick and only four other players in the Premier League have scored more non-penalty goals than Wissa (13) so far this season: Erling Haaland (19), Mohamed Salah (18), Alexander Isak (17) and Chris Wood (15).

Indeed, it is that quartet of players who Wissa is hot on the heels of with those four the only ones to have a better goals-per-90 ratio than the Brentford man (0.61).

They're also the only players to manage more goals from open play in the league this season with Wissa on 10, which means he is only one open-play goal behind Salah.

That of course means that three of Wissa's goals have come from set plays (including from Schade's long throw delivery on Wednesday night), which is the joint-highest number of set-piece goals of any Premier League player and shows just how well Brentford's team strategies have helped their forward up his goal count.

It's a mix of Brentford's great service to Wissa and the player's own ever-improving poaching instinct that have seen him up his tally with over a quarter of the season left to play.

In fact, no player has a better non-penalty xG per shot ratio than the 28-year-old, who has 0.22npxG – the same as Christopher Nkunku and Pablo Sarabia – suggesting that when the Brentford man gets the ball from his colleagues, he's been put in the best possible situation to take a chance.

Wissa has already broken some of his own personal best records this season but considering his form and with Bees still to play a further 11 matches, the Brentford man has ample time to hit brand new heights.
