"It's not easy to leave after five-and-a-half great years. I have experienced unique things and enjoyed incredible moments here," said Wirtz, who moved to Leverkusen from local rivals Cologne in January 2020, aged 16.

"The club always supported me and believed in me, even during the difficult time of my injury. I would like to thank them for that and for the great sympathy I received from the people in charge, my teammates and really all the staff every day. And to the fans of Bayer 04, who have driven me and the team on all these years, I would like to say: It was an honour for me to give my best for you."

Wirtz made 140 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen, registering 35 goals and over 40 assists. The 22-year-old was named the 2023/24 Bundesliga Player of the Season for his part in Bayer's maiden title win, whilst helping the Rhineland club lift that season's DFB Cup and the 2024 German Supercup.

The 31-time Germany international had a hand in 31 goals, including five UEFA Champions League strikes of his own, across 45 matches in the recently ended 2024/25 season to cement his status as one of the world game's finest young players.

"Florian joined us as a 16-year-old and has built up close and warm relationships with many people at the club over the years. With his attitude, his passion and his unconditional will to win, he not only motivated and inspired his teammates on the pitch, but also the people in the immediate vicinity of the team and throughout the club," said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.

"Florian never played just for himself, everything was secondary to the success of the team. I would like to sincerely thank him for this on behalf of everyone. Florian Wirtz will always remain a part of Bayer 04."
