Wing-back or nothing for Saul after latest humiliation

Saul Niguez was given his second Premier League start of the season last week against Watford, and it went the exact same way as his first start – a humiliating half time substitution.

Given how poor he was in that first game against Aston Villa, and in some of his subsequent performances, it’s surprising he was given the second start at all, with Ross Barkley impressing more in his recent cameos.

We can’t imagine Thomas Tuchel will make the same mistake again. There are two central midfield slots available, and N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, RLC, Barkley and perhaps even Trevoh Chalobah will now be in the rankings above Saul to play there.

So where does that leave him? We’ve heard Tuchel sound open to the idea of using him as relief for Marcos Alonso at left back while Ben Chilwell is out.

It’s exactly what Saul was trying to avoid by coming to Chelsea – but if the choice is play there or not play at all, he might have to suck it up.
