‘Win and you’re a hero’ – De Bruyne issues Man City rallying cry ahead of UCL final | OneFootball

Kevin De Bruyne has told his Manchester City teammates they can be heroes if the club secure a first ever Champions League success against Chelsea tomorrow.

City face Chelsea in the Champions League final in Porto, as the two Premier League rivals go head-to-head with the chance to be crowned champions of Europe.

Pep Guardiola’s side have reached this stage for the first time in their history and will be looking secure a historic treble with Champions League success, having already won both the Premier League and League Cup this season.

De Bruyne has praised his side for their achievement in reaching a maiden final, but has warned it will be deemed ‘almost a failure’ if City do not return from Portugal with the famous trophy.

“If you win you’re a hero. If you lose you’re almost a failure,” De Bruyne told a pre-match press conference.

“Coming to this stage is incredibly well done by the team and as an individual but if you don’t win it its something you don’t want to experience but it happens.”

Winning the Champions League has been the target of the club and ownership in recent seasons after a decade of huge success domestically, winning five Premier League titles since the club’s transformative takeover in 2008.

De Bruyne admits it is a ‘privilege’ to contest club football’s biggest game ahead of the meeting with Chelsea and is hopeful his side can enjoy the occasion and return home victorious.

“It’s been one of the goals of the club and the players. Being able to be there tomorrow and to perform on the highest stage in the world is something of a privilege.

“Everyone understands the pressure but at least we can enjoy this game and we should take it with a smile and take it as something where you want to perform and show your best.”
