Newcastle United will welcome Southampton at St. James’ Park this Tuesday night as they look to earn a positive result at home in the EFL Cup. The Magpies managed to secure a 1-0 win over the Saints in the first leg which will give them a lead to protect in this midweek fixture in the Carabao Cup semifinals.

Eddie Howe could choose to opt for a 4-3-3 formation once again and might keep changes to a minimum for this game. Callum Wilson will lead the charge for the Tyneside club on the attacking end of the pitch.

Defence

Nick Pope will feature in between the sticks for the Magpies after securing a clean sheet in his last outing. Sven Botman will resume his defensive partnership with Fabian Schar at the centre of the Newcastle backline as they look to keep things solid at the back during the 90 minutes.

Kieran Trippier will be a nailed-on starter at right-back while Dan Burn looks to give a good account of himself on the other side as the left-back. Howe will give both of them the license to get forward and express themselves in the opponent’s half.

Jamaal Lascelles will offer cover for the defensive positions on the bench.

St. James’ Park

Midfield

Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes will anchor the midfield for Newcastle as they try to establish their superiority over the opposition at the centre of the park. All three of them need to be at the top of their game if the Magpies are to secure a convincing win in midweek.

Jacob Murphy and Elliot Anderson will be available for selection on the bench as they wait for their chance to shine in the second half if Howe decides to call upon their services.

Attack

Joelinton will try to produce another hardworking performance as the left-sided wide player while Miguel Almiron could get the nod to weave his magic from the right flank.

As mentioned earlier, Callum Wilson will spearhead Newcastle’s attack on his own up top. The English striker will be given the responsibility to carry some of the goal-scoring workload for the Magpies in the final third.

Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin will have to settle for a spot on the bench and might come on to influence the game in the latter stages if the Tyneside club are in need of a goal by then.
