Willem II striker Michael de Leeuw has recalled playing with Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

Now 35, De Leeuw has returned to Willem II this season after playing around the world.

De Leeuw played with Van Dijk at FC Groningen and told Voetbalzone: “Back then, he was already very strong and smart in the duels.

“He already had the opening he now has at the highest level. I didn't necessarily think he would reach the level of Liverpool, but you could already see that he had potential, yes.

"I always enjoy following players I've played with. There are several players who have made very nice steps.

"For example, Filip Kostic now plays for Juventus. Of course you sometimes think: 'nice clubs', but that was not for me. I now have a very nice career that I am very happy with."
