The scoreline of the Manchester United versus Arsenal WSL clash certainly didn’t justify our Gunner women’s efforts. Arsenal Women totally dominated the Red Devils in that game, especially in the second half when they hit top gear. Ahead of the game, many felt that our girls were the underdogs; it was great to see them remind everyone, “We are The Arsenal.” United were lucky to snatch a draw, but it was clear Arsenal were better. Since that game, we’ve been eagerly anticipating Arsenal’s next match. We hoped that the Gunner women could improve on their performance from last weekend at the Leigh Sports Village in Manchester. One way of building on that was undoubtedly resolving their struggles in front of goal. After the draw, many pointed out that Arsenal showed signs of improvement, but the Arsenal women’s attack still didn’t click. In the lead-up to the match against Brighton, interim manager Slegers addressed the issues regarding her team’s attack. She acknowledged that they’re making progress, which was evident against Manchester United, and she now hopes they can take the next step, which is scoring goals. On her team’s attacking play, Slegers stated, “We are talking about forward intent, and we are looking at the details. So, our passes need to mean something because we want to go towards the goal. So, every pass needs to have a message or a meaning in our game. But I think a lot of things we did really well against United, performance-wise and attacking-wise. “I think we found good spaces, and we had good movements. We linked up well together. Again, we had more and better entries into the box. So, I think we are closer, but again, we need to score those goals as well. But I do think overall we had a lot of positives performance-wise against United.”
Arsenal must perform exceptionally well in this game against Brighton women. The Seagulls have had the best start to their season under their new boss, Dario Vidosic, sitting 3rd in the WSL table, ahead of Arsenals 5th.. Brighton have only suffered a single defeat, a 1-0 loss to Manchester City. They’ve become difficult to beat and tough to score past, only conceding 4 goals in 6 games, which shows their growth. They’ll certainly be a formidable opponent for our girls.
Are you worried about our Gunners form versus Brighton’s super-start to the season?
