Following the sacking of Michael Beale, Reims manager Will Still remains a potential candidate for the vacant managerial role at Sunderland, according to The Athletic.

The former Rangers manager’s stint in charge of the Black Cats lasted just 63 days meaning that the role has become vacant for the second time this season. Still was a leading candidate for the job at the Stadium of Light following the departure of Tony Mowbray and was even interviewed by the Championship club’s chairman. With the job vacant just 9 weeks later, the Belgian-born coach is being linked with the Sunderland job once again.

The North East club’s pursuit of Still was unsuccessful last time around. This was due to a reluctance of Reims to let their manager leave midseason and the hefty compensation fee that was required to release the former Beerschot manager from his contract, according to The Athletic. This release clause remains in place so any second approach for Still is likely to be in the summer.

‘I want to come home’

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Still has made his desire to return home and manage in England no secret. Commenting on the prospect of managing in England, the Reims boss said, “I’ve been abroad all my life, and I’ve been working in an environment that isn’t quite mine all my life. And I just want to come home.”
