Will Logic Prevail For Liverpool In This Window…

Article image:Will Logic Prevail For Liverpool In This Window…

One of the saddest moments for any football supporter, is when their teams summer transfer business is prematurely complete. Now and and again, I’ll type in the name of a player we’ve been linked to, and read only the twitter threads that state a signing is imminent. Anything that offers bad news (often logic) is dismissed, and I start to envisage what could be. A deep dive to uncover some background on the player might come next, with a thorough look at his FIFA statistics. If all is well, I fully expect this man to arrive. But once more, that logic takes over.

Liverpool have the most brilliant transfer committee / Sporting Director of recent times. The acquisitions have often been brilliant, and we all revel in the elite dealings of our club. Alongside this pride sits frustration, when we inevitably do wonders, yet still leave ourselves just short. Liverpool always seem in need of just one more piece, yet that piece is often like an obscure piece of the jigsaw that is never quite found.

If Julian Ward (Sporting Director) does nothing more in this window, the walls will not cave in, and the reds will still enjoy a successful campaign. The frustration builds from knowing that if a little more business were to be done, then a remarkable season could unfold. Everyone knows the position that lacks, and even the most ardent fans cannot deny the need for midfield reinforcements.

Thiago Alcantara was this week confirmed as a multi week casualty, and his lack of presence is a major blow. This will inevitably mean that Naby Keita takes up the LCM role, but that is not an issue at all. The controlling mode of that position means a more fluid and attack minded RCM is incorporated, and despite the youthful brilliance of Harvey Elliott, it’s a risky situation. I stated prior to the season that Harvey could be the breakout player this term, but his minutes should only be as a rotating starter behind an established central midfielder. That established player needs to be a new recruit, and not Jordan Henderson.

Jurgen Klopp has a few week to decide how this season unfolds, and with City already looking ominously efficient, any decision may just be irrelevant anyway. The key is to want the maximum from this group, and with reinforcements surely needed, hopefully more logic will prevail. The reds are one of world football powerhouses, and a global marketing force. To ensure sustainability beyond the Klopp era, the reds must at least be squad ready for the next phase of their existence. To settle now would be misguided, and take away silverware that would probably be forthcoming. We have to be looking to progress and evolve each year, or we could end up as United did at the end of Fergie’s reign.

I honestly believe Liverpool will react in this window, but I’ve been wrong in saying that before. Julian Ward will want a successful window, given his recent promotion to the top job. He (as well as Klopp) will know full well the deficiencies in this squad, and the murmurs of a major signing at the start of the summer very much points to this. We cannot wait, even if there is that special talent out there that simply isn’t attainable right now. Liverpool Football Club should never be a club that merely muddles through, but simply takes what it needs, when it’s required. If we have to pivot, then there are many viable options to be had.

This season may just hinge on the next few weeks of the transfer window, and though I will hope for the best, logic will almost certainly be preparing for the worst.
