Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has this week provided an insight into the mental struggles he faced, whilst sidelined with his most recent injury.
Midfielder De Jong, for his part, is of course fresh off a return from a long-term spell on the sidelines.
Owing to an ankle injury suffered all the way back in April, the 27-year-old was forced to sit out both the European Championships with the Netherlands, and the early months of Barcelona’s 2024/25 campaign.
And the significace of as much was not at all lost on De Jong himself…
Speaking to the media after linking up with Ronald Koeman’s Dutch squad on Wednesday, the former Ajax standout was drawn on his injury nightmare, which ultimately dragged out for months longer than first expected.
And De Jong, in quotes gathered by Diario Sport, went on to admit that at one point, he found himself questioning whether he would ever make a full recovery:
“It was difficult. I missed a lot of games and most importantly the European Championship, of course, so it was very difficult.
“Sometimes I wondered: Will I ever make a full recovery? That went through my head sometimes, but I always had the confidence that eventually I could play football again.”
