Will Grigg makes honest Sunderland admission after securing Stadium of Light exit | OneFootball

Rotherham United loanee Will Grigg has admitted his time at Sunderland left him reflecting on his happier times after struggling to find form in the North East.

The Northern Ireland striker moved from Wigan Athletic to Sunderland on deadline day in January 2019, but things didn’t quite work out for him on Wearside.

“The main thing my time there has done is make me look back at my successful times, my happy periods. It gives you that extra bit of motivation and drive to get back to that place,” Grigg explained, as quoted by the The Star

“Everyone sees the glamorous side of football. But at the end of the day players are still humans, we’re still people. We go through ups and downs and emotions, just like everyone in life.

“It hasn’t been easy at all. But I’m not going to sit and moan and make excuses at all. It’s in the past now and I’m looking forward to being with Rotherham,” Grigg added.

The 30-year-old made the move to Rotherham this summer on a season-long loan after being told he was not in Sunderland Manager Lee Johnson’s plans.

“It wasn’t a subject I wanted to get too involved in, to be honest. I wanted to bypass it as quickly as possible,” Grigg explained.

“To be fair, the manager at Sunderland was good. We spoke about where we were at and he said he just wanted me to enjoy my football again. He was very helpful,” Grigg added.

Grigg got a debut goal for the Millers in their 6-0 Papa John’s Trophy win over Doncaster Rovers, but is still waiting for his first start in League One.

“It’s an important move, it’s as simple as that. I’ll do everything I can to make it the right one,” Grigg vowed.

After a difficult spell at Sunderland, it’s refreshing to hear Will Grigg talk so openly about a side of football we often don’t hear about.

After making the move to Rotherham, Grigg will be looking to put his tough spell in the North East behind him and start to find the back of the net for his new club – something he has a proven record of doing at League One level.
