Will Fish indicates he won’t be returning to Hibernian

Manchester United loanee Will Fish has apologised to Hibernian fans for the club’s disappointing season and given a pretty clear indication his future will lie away from the club.

The Hibees followed up last season’s fifth place finish with a poor eighth position in the table.

Fish played an integral role this season and was a rare shining light in a rather dull year for the Edinburgh-based side.

The 21-year-old missed the final few fixtures of the season after picking up a back injury but he had played 45 games previously, scoring one goal and creating two more.

This combined with the 22 games he played in his first season at Easter Road means he managed to represent the side a mammoth 67 times in two seasons.

The Mancunian centre back, despite being unable to play his part in the final four matches, took to X to express his regret on how the season panned out for Hibernian.

He wrote, “I can only apologise this season wasn’t good enough for a club like this. I promise I’ve absolutely loved playing for Hibs & had some incredible memories along the way. Good luck for the future .. better times are coming! Thank you again.”

This message to the fans certainly feels like a farewell and that he won’t be back plying his trade in the Scottish capital for a third successive season.

It has been reported that Fish was a target for Hibs in the summer.

Earlier in the season, former manager Nick Montgomery stated, “We are a big club. So, for Will, it’s going to be what is going to be the best option for him. We’re definitely going to be one of those options. But I’m sure there will be many others.”

Teams such as Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town have been credited with interest but it is unlikely that the Tractor Boys will entertain a move for the player now that they have been promoted to the Premier League.

Fish, who has been described as a “physically imposing” centre back, may be tempted to join a Championship club but he may also have ambitions to break into United’s first team squad this pre-season.

The senior defenders have put in a shambolic defensive performance over the course of the season, conceding 84 goals in all competitions and with numerous high-profile players on the move such as Raphael Varane and likely Jonny Evans, there may be a space for him to take up.

Willy Kambwala’s emergence as serviceable back-up has shown that if you are good enough, you are old enough. However, it has been reported that United will bring at least one centre back in the summer, if not two, which would certainly make it harder for Fish to make his breakthrough.
