Will Deniz Undav become too expensive for VfB Stuttgart?

Deniz Undav’s loan spell at VfB Stuttgart has completely changed his and the Swabian’s fortunes. The German forward is experiencing the best form of his career so far and is helping Stuttgart attempt a top-four finish for the first time since 2009.

With Undav’s loan deal including a potential option to buy, it feels like a match made in heaven. The 27-year-old has previously stated his desire to make his move permanent with Stuttgart: “I can say that I feel totally comfortable at VfB. We are a unit, the fans are insane. A real team has grown together. I can certainly imagine staying there longer.”

At the time of the loan deal, the option to buy was set at €12m, which at the time was said to be too expensive for the Bundesliga club.

However, the option to buy fee clause is performance-based. Simply put – the better the player does, the higher the amount. With 14 goals in the league this season, the fee is only going to rise. What’s more, it’s likely the forward will be apart of Germany’s Euro 2024 squad.

It was reported around the Christmas period that the fee had already risen to €18m. Since then, Undav has scored nine additional goals, including a hat trick against RB Leipzig.

The fee for the in-form striker is now said to be around €20m which could rise even further.

VfB sport director Fabian Wohlgemuth is already in discussion with Brighton about various payment methods. It would a crying shame should Undav become too expensive for Stuttgart when the player wishes to stay for good.
