With Chelsea making a host of new signings themselves over the last two transfer windows, there is also the prospect of returning loan players in the summer.

It’s easy to forget that Romelu Lukaku is still a Chelsea player and is only on loan at Inter Milan, and most Chelsea fans have had it in their head that he would not be coming back. But he actually might.

The original thought was that Inter and Chelsea will extend his loan for another season at the end of this one, but there are now real doubts over that happening, according to fresh reports coming out of Italy.

Italian journalist Niccolo Ceccarini gave an update on Inter’s transfer dealings and revealed that the Nerazzurri are concerned by Lukaku’s form and fitness this season, with the Belgian only managing two goals and less than 400 minutes of football.

Ceccarini wrote in his editorial piece on TuttoMercatoWeb: “As for Lukaku’s future, the next few months will be decisive for the Belgian striker. The eventual extension of the loan will depend very much on what will be its yield.”
