Quoted by TMW, he explained to Foot Mercato: "I want to conquer more and more goals, that's why I chose PSG: I think that here there is an opportunity to do so."

Wijnaldum's Bosman arrival was matched by Gigio Donnarumma from AC Milan, Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid and also Barcelona great Lionel Messi.

On playing with Messi, he continued: "I am very happy to play with him.

"Not only me, but the whole club and Ligue 1 itself: he is one of the best players of all time. I am happy to be able to train with him: I've always played against him, and it was hard, having a player like him in the team is always good.

"I'm also knowing him as a person, I was struck by his humility."

Last season Holland international Wijnaldum managed 51 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals. This term with PSG, the midfielder has managed seven appearances. His contract with the Parisians runs to 2024.

PSG currently sit top of the Ligue 1 table with a 100 per cent record from their opening six games of the season. However, there was been criticism after a disappointing opening draw with Club Brugge in the Champions League last week.
