Netherlands captain Georginio Wijnaldum insists he could lead himself and his teammates off the pitch should they be subjected to abuse at Euro 2020.
Wijnaldum will wear a rainbow-coloured armband when De Oranje face the Czech Republic in Budapest, amid ongoing fallout with Uefa and LGBTQ groups.
The 30-year-old believes football should be more inclusive and has criticised governing bodies for marginalising those in vulnerable positions.
“It is not just against Hungary,” he told reporters. “The armband means a lot because we stand for diversity – one love means everybody is a part of it and everybody should be free to be who they are.
“In our opinion [the right to be yourself] has been encroached upon. As players we have a podium to do whatever we can to help.”
