Wigan have announced the appointment of one of their FA Cup heroes, Shaun Maloney, to replace Kolo Touré.

Touré was fired after just nine matches in charge after failing to register a single win in charge of the Championship strugglers.

Maloney made 91 appearances as a player for the Latics between 2011 and 2015 and scored 15 goals.

“I’m very proud to be back,” the Scotsman told the club’s official website. “I have amazing memories here and created some fabulous moments with teams and with fans, and I’m excited to get started.

“The feeling that I have from those times as a player is a big factor for me. I have been here previously and have always felt a great warmth from the supporters.

“I want the fans to see a team that is giving absolutely everything, fighting to get better and the supporters need to feel that. The connection is there, we just need to reawaken it.”

The coach was previously in charge of Hibernian for a total of 19 games between December 2021 and April 2022, winning just six times during his spell in charge.
