Wigan Athletic are willing to match the buyout clause in Burton Albion striker Victor Adeboyejo’s contract to take him to the DW Stadium, according to this morning’s Patreon report from Alan Nixon.

The Latics have recently lost a player in the attacking department with former loanee Nathan Broadhead heading back to parent club Everton – and a fresh loan move for the Toffees’ man seems unlikely with the player closing in on a move to Ipswich Town.

However, Kolo Toure’s side are still looking to be active in the transfer window with this report revealing that they are targeting four or five new faces and will look to sign even more players if others depart.

Who did Wigan sign Jason Kerr from?

Hearts Aberdeen St Mirren St Johnstone

Adeboyejo could be one of those signings, with the forward struggling with Barnsley last season but managing to shine with Burton, recording 11 goals in 25 competitive appearances this term and scoring 13 times in all competitions.

Currently at the bottom of the Championship table, Toure’s side are in desperate need of new faces and could benefit from having more firepower up top, scoring just 26 goals in their 26 league matches so far this term.

They are yet to secure their first signing of this window – but could wrap this one up quickly by triggering the Burton forward’s release clause – allowing the Latics to bypass negotiations with the League One outfit.

The Verdict:

Considering the 24-year-old didn’t make a huge impact at Oakwell last season, this may not seem like a great addition on paper but he must be full of confidence right now and could make a great impact at the DW Stadium because of that.

From the player’s perspective, he surely has nothing to lose if he does make this move. The worst-case scenario is that he ends up in the tier he’s currently in next season, so this switch seems like a no-brainer if he can get reassurances regarding his playing time.

He would probably win much more playing time here than he would at the MKM Stadium in the long term, with Aaron Connolly, Oscar Estupinan, Allahyar Sayyadmanesh, Tyler Smith and Benjamin Tetteh all able to operate up top for the Tigers.

At 24, he needs to be winning as much game time as possible and if he doesn’t have a chance of being a regular starter at Hull or Wigan, he should be looking to stay put in the Midlands for now.

His current side are in relegation danger though, so he does need to start weighing up his future. The striker certainly won’t want to be competing in League Two next season.
