Wigan Athletic will not be due a percentage of the fee generated for Antonee Robinson’s services if Fulham decide to sell him to Inter Milan or another side in January, according to an update from journalist Alan Nixon (27/11; 3:11pm).

The United States international is currently away with his national side for the World Cup – and has the opportunity to impress on the world stage as he potentially eyes a move away from Craven Cottage in the coming years.

Also keeping a clean sheet against England on Friday evening, that will only go on to raise his valuation with Inter Milan reported to be lining up a move for him ahead of the winter window.

Although previously interested sides Manchester City and Wolves are refusing to pay the amount needed to lure him away from the English capital, believed to be as much as £20m, the Italian top-tier outfit may be able to come closer to matching that valuation.

Wigan won’t receive any percentage of that fee because they didn’t include a sell-on clause in their deal with the Cottagers when they sold him back in 2020.

The Verdict:

To be fair to the Latics, they were in administration at the time of his sale and needed every penny they could get for him, and they probably maximised his price tag by not including a clause like this.

And at that point, the club needed to prioritise the short term in their quest to survive, so many supporters won’t be too bothered about the fact they won’t receive a fee for him in the future.

It’s slightly frustrating from their point of view though – because even a 10% sell-on clause could provide them with £2m extra to spend and in the end, that could be the difference between survival and relegation.

On paper, £2m isn’t a huge amount in the Championship but that could end up funding a couple of eye-catching loan deals with the club able to pay a higher wage to a loanee with this extra money.

The Latics have only got three temporary additions at this stage and considering they are allowed five in a matchday squad, they have room for a couple more to come in so it’s a shame they won’t benefit if Robinson is sold during the winter window.
