Martina Cox, wife of Sean Cox, has thanked Liverpool supporters for helping her family through an incredibly difficult time, according to the Echo.

Mr Cox was attacked by a group of Roma fans outside Anfield last April, receiving life-brain injuries that left him in a coma for six weeks.

“It means an awful lot, obviously the club and the supporters have really rallied around Sean and it’s just been amazing,” Mrs Cox responded.

“We are so grateful for it. Obviously Sean has a long road ahead and we really appreciate the money that’s been raised.

“Just being around the city, people were so willing to help and they would pick us up in taxis and once they picked up on the accent they would ask if we were related to Sean and they wouldn’t charge us.

“People were offering accommodation and just wanted to help because they see the connection as fans of Liverpool Football Club.

“It’s been very touching and it warms you. It’s made us feel really good. It’s been an incredibly difficult 14 months, but all of this solidarity for Sean has really helped.”

She continued: “Sean is coming to the end of his rehab in Ireland and they are happy enough with the progress.

“The most frustrating thing for Sean is he can’t communicate as well as he would want to.

“He knows what to say but he just can’t get the words out, so that part is very frustrating for him and upsetting for us.

“When he goes over to England, the plan is to tell him then and it will just amazing to get him here.

“It will be very emotional getting him back here because obviously in the early days we had no idea if that was going to happen again.”

She added: “Even driving down to Anfield today and past it, I got goosebumps you know, it’s a great stadium and it will be great to Sean involved again.

“I just want to say a massive big thank you to Liverpool supporters and the club for their support. The fans have really taken him into their hearts and we are so grateful.”

Stephen Felle, Chairman of the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust, added: “In Dublin, you had people who played for Liverpool 20 years ago being mobbed, people like Jason McAteer.

“It’s almost an Irish club! I wasn’t a lifelong fan unlike Sean and neither was Martina, but you just see so many Irish people supporting them. The people of Liverpool have been so amazing.

“Sean will move to the north of England in September and he is moving to a specialist neurological centre for several months.

“The plan is to get Sean back into the Cox family home next year, so the house needs to be re-modelled for downstairs access and the various facilities he will need.

“In terms of that specialist neurological care that Sean will need going forward, unfortunately that is not available in Ireland but it is in England. It’s only an hour on a flight.

“The logistics won’t be easy, but the idea will be that Sean will spend several months of the year here.”
