England boss Sarina Wiegman wants lots of energy from her side when the Lionesses complete their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifying campaign against Luxembourg at the Bet365 Stadium in Stoke on Tuesday evening.

The Lionesses have already qualified for next year’s tournament finals after defeating Austria 2-0 in Wiener Neustadt on Saturday evening. The dead rubber game against Luxembourg will be all about celebrations, the fans and a variety of players getting minutes out on the pitch as England are welcomed home by a sell-out crowd, a little over a month on from being crowned European champions for the first time at Wembley.

“We want to play a very energetic game and for people to see we collaborate as a team,” said head coach Wiegman when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We want to be in possession as much as possible because their level compared to ours….there is a big difference so I think we should show that.

“We want to win this game and get a good win. We want to take everything out of it, especially in possession but also, win it back when we don’t have possession in moments of the game.”

England’s performances at the EUROs captured the hearts of the nation and fans have scrambled for tickets to watch the Lionesses to play following the conclusion of the tournament. Wiegman said that England are looking forward to playing in front of another big crowd in Stoke.

She said “It’s really exciting. The support we have had has been great in the EUROs and they keep coming now. Tomorrow will be 30,000 coming to watch and we really want to show our game again, make a celebration and have a nice football game.

“This team are so eager to do well. We’ve seen in training sessions and at the game on Saturday, the football is so sharp and at such a good level. The team just want to do well in every moment that we get.”

Once the curtains had closed on the EUROs, it wasn’t long before England icons Jill Scott and Ellen White announced their retirements from the beautiful game. Wiegman said that the Lionesses must now move into a new era without two of the nation’s all-time greats.

“It’s different without them,” said Wiegman. “They’re big personalities on and off the pitch and they bring so much experience so the dynamic of the team changed just a little bit.

“We have to adapt now and we do miss them still but what happens is that other players will step up and others already have.”

England’s final FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifier against Luxembourg in Stoke kicks-off at 7.30pm on Tuesday evening.
