England head coach Sarina Wiegman said that she was proud of her players for the determination that they showed to win UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.

The Lionesses defeated Spain 3-1 on penalties in the final in Basel last night. The two sides had played out a 1-1 draw in normal time. England retained the trophy that they won for the very first time in 2022.

When speaking to the media in the post-match press conference, Wiegman admitted that winning another EURO title hadn’t sunk in.

“I’m very happy,” Wiegman said. “I actually can’t believe it myself, it’s like how can this happen? It happened, so I’m very happy and I’m so incredibly proud of the team and the staff. We are just going to party tonight.”

Chloe Kelly stepped up to net the winning penalty and continue her own personal England legacy. Wiegman admitted that it was the perfect ending to what has been a rollercoaster 12 months for the player.

She said “Yeah, absolutely [incredible journey]. Every player has their own story and I think every story is incredible on it’s own but her story is one that’s the most out in the open.

“I’m so happy for her. She has been fighting to come back and to be at her highest level. She loves these moments, she wants to take that penalty of course and celebrate that. To be able to score that penalty under that pressure is very impressive.”

Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton also shone in what was her first senior international tournament as a number one. Wiegman was pleased with how her goalkeeper stepped up in moments of huge pressure.

She said “Every player has their own story and her journey has been incredible too. After starting the tournament and losing the first game, you hope to win five finals. You really have to step up and so did she, I think she has done amazing.

“It’s a little bit like a fairytale to stop those penalties in the final and win it.”

England retained their EURO title in the most difficult way. They were defeated in their opening match against France and had to come from behind to see-off Sweden, Italy and Spain in the knockouts. Wiegman hailed the team for their togetherness and determination.

She said “I think this is the most chaotic, ridiculous tournament that we have played and every time, we have came back. In the quarter-final, semi-final and now in the final, we have come back.

“Of course, we have players that have talent and the togetherness of this team is really incredible but we also have the belief that we can come back. The players say that we can win by any means and we just never give up.

“Today, we had moments where we really had to fight to keep the ball out of our net but I thought we also had some very good moments in the game.

“We had the talent, the belief to come back and every player was ready to come on the pitch and show up straight away, that’s not easy. I’m just really grateful that I’m part of this team.”

England will return home later today and the celebrations are expected to continue well into the week.
