Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he almost signed a young Jordan Henderson before the midfielder joined Liverpool in 2011.

The former Manchester United manager claims he was advised against signing Henderson by medical staff, as per the Daily Mail, and he went on to cost Liverpool a fee of £16.2 million according to Transfermarkt.

Henderson was being managed by Steve Bruce at the time Ferguson showed interest, but the Scot says that he was advised against signing the midfielder by medical staff.

“We were ready to make a bid for Jordan Henderson at Sunderland,” Ferguson said. “I spoke to Steve Bruce and he loved the guy.

“And then our medical department said they were not happy with his running style — he could be the type to have injuries.

“I must say it was one of my bits of management to make sure the player is always available.

“If you sign a player and he is not available for you, it is a waste of time so that is the point I have to make about Jordan.

“We loved him as a player and he has proved that now, he has been fantastic and all the stories I am being told, it tells me I missed out on a really good person.”

It was Kenny Dalglish who brought Henderson to Anfield 10-years-ago, only for the player to become Liverpool’s first captain in 30-years to lift the Premier League.

On Sunday Henderson will be tasked with keeping Bruno Fernandes quiet which won’t be easy.

Especially when Liverpool have their problems in defence and they also need to try contain Marcus Rashford.

It remains to be seen which attacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opts for because it sounds like Anthony Martial will be available, and Edinson Cavani returned from his suspension against Burnley during the week.
