Why Sevilla sacked head coach Diego Alonso and who could replace him | OneFootball

After going 12 games without a win in La Liga and the Champions League, Sevilla have made the decision to sack head coach Diego Alonso.

In an official communication, adapted from Marca, Sevilla wrote, “Sevilla announces that it has sacked Diego Alonso as blanquirrojo coach. The club thanks the Uruguayan manager for his services and wishes him the best for the future.”

The announcement comes after Sevilla’s 3-0 defeat to Getafe, in a game where they looked hapless and didn’t cause Getafe any trouble all night. The hierarchy was hoping to wait until the Christmas break to make an ultimate decision, but their run of form has precipitated matters, and they have decided to act before their upcoming game against Granda in midweek.

Diego Alonso, who arrived in October, is now the second manager to be sacked by Sevilla this season, following José Luis Mendilibar, in a season to forget.

Sevilla must now look for alternatives to guide the team through this difficult period. With the side out of Europe altogether after coming last in their Champions League knock-out group, there is no enticement of Europa League football, which may reduce the number of those willing to join a club that is in freefall, on joint points with Cádiz in the relegation zone.

One name being mentioned is that of former Valencia and Getafe coach Quique Sánchez Flores. The club plans to offer any incoming manager a contract until the end of the season, as they did with Diego Alonso.

It was Victor Orta, Sevilla’s sporting director, who has previously come out in support of the Uruguayan, who explained the decision made tonight. “With a heavy heart, we have dismissed Diego Alonso. There are a lot of circumstances that haven’t been in line with the work done, and the work done has not been in line with the results. In football, the first thing that goes is the coach. Tomorrow, we will work on bringing in a new coach as soon as possible for the important game against Granada.”
