As we get closer to the summer window, it is only natural that players around Europe are getting linked with transfers. One of them is a familiar face for Celtic fans. As reported by talkSPORT, Matt O’Riley is attracting the attention of clubs in Italy. AS Roma are one of the teams eyeing a swoop for the midfielder, who has endured a tough season in the Premier League.

So, why is O'Riley being linked with a move away from Brighton & Hove Albion bad news for Celtic? Well, there is more than one reason behind that.

In recent times, players have a terrible record after making high-profile Celtic exits. Odsonne Edouard to Crystal Palace, Jota to Al-Ittihad, Kyogo to Rennes and O'Riley to Brighton & Hove Albion, all of these moves have not worked out.

That will make it more difficult for Celtic to bring in big transfer fees in the future. That is because clubs will be wary of shelling out those kinds of figures for the club's players, having seen plenty of them struggle after leaving.

The second reason is linked to a potential sell-on clause. When O'Riley joined Brighton & Hove Albion, there had been some rumours of there being one.

The issue is, sell-on clauses are based on the transfer profit a club makes. Brighton & Hove Albion are believed to have shelled out a £25 million-plus fee to sign O'Riley from Celtic. It is hard to imagine that they would be able to recoup that, after his struggles in the Premier League.

That would mean that there won't be any sell-on fee for Celtic. And at the end of the day, when players leave the club for top-five leagues, you want to see them succeed there. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be happening at the moment.
