Why Marseille can’t sign Paul Pogba… for now | OneFootball

Olympique de Marseille have been heavily linked with a move for Paul Pogba (31) ever since CAF’s ruling towards the end of 2024 that considerably reduced the Frenchman’s ban. His ban was reduced from four years to 18 months, meaning that he is now allowed to train. He is permitted to make his return to the pitch from the start of March, however, if he is to return to the field then, he won’t be able to do it at Marseille.

Unlike in other leagues, Ligue 1 sides are not allowed to register free agents in their squad beyond the closure of the winter transfer window. It means that Pogba, despite not being under contract at another club, would not simply be able to play for Marseille come March, as he would in some other leagues. That rule – of course – applies to all free agents.

There is an exemption for Ligue 1 sides but it is a rare one. Clubs in France’s top flight can sign a ‘joker’ in the event of the death of a player in the squad, a severe injury to a goalkeeper, or if a player suffers an injury that will rule him out for over three months while on international duty with the France national team. Pogba, therefore, would have to wait until next season, should he wish to play for Les Phocéens.
